The Unitarian-Universalist Church of Lawton

The Unitarian-Universalist Church of Lawton began in January, 1993, with about a dozen people who met in private homes. They studied, discussed and enjoyed the fellowship of people with a common interest in thoughtful, individual belief.

In July, 1994, they decided to try to become a church. A public meeting for the purpose of forming a church was held September 8, 1994. The combined original group and people resulting from the public meeting began meeting at 701 B Avenue on September 25, 1994.

The fellowship incorporated as a church March 20, 1995, chartered on June 4, 1995, and affiliated with the Unitarian-Universalist Association in January 1996 with thirty-two members.

At this time we do not have a minister. Our speakers may be a Unitarian-Universalist ordained minister, a ministerial student, a lay speaker from another Unitarian-Universalist church, a minister from another denomination, a leader of the community, or a representative of a world religion. Our services are rich in a wide variety cultural and spiritual global experiences and spiritual  diversity.

Our members are from a wide range of occupational fields, ages and individual religious beliefs. Often, a member of the congregation will present a sermon of her/his own, or a sermon that was written by a minister of another church. Frequently, interesting and diverse people from the community will speak on spiritual or social isssues on which they feel strongly. All are welcome!

The Unitarian-Universalist Church of Lawton is a place where one can freely discuss personal and religious philosophies. We support and respect each person's search to develop a faith upon which we can base our daily lives.

We have several people who are long-time Unitarians, and others who are just becoming acquainted with Unitarianism. We are a diverse group of people, bonded together by our love for religious freedom and tolerance. We offer you a warm, caring community.
